Due to a problem communicating with our web host company, Visionary Communications, EverythingCody.com was down for about 20 hours. The outage lasted from about 7 PM on 11/27/06 to about 3 PM on 11/28/06.
As those of you who read my blog know, we've been on an extended research trip that covered 5,355 miles through 15 states. During that time, I've been able to maintain and update EverythingCody.com from my laptop computer. I was at the mercy of the quality of Internet connections I was able to locate each day during the journey.
At the time of the outage, we were staying at a hotel in Hays, Kansas and discovered we were unable to upload my updates to the site. Worse yet, while trying to upload the updates, the server completely erased the entire website file. This would have been no problem because I had a current backup, but was unable to get it uploaded to the server. My frantic calls and emails to Visionary Communications went unanswered.
So we drove straight through to Cody from Kansas and once I logged onto my home connection, was able to restore the website at about 3 PM.
I apologize for the problem. It was incredibly frustrating to have all the info I needed to restore the site but having the connection refuse to upload the data to the server. Then having VCN's phone system hang up on me twice after extended waits and getting no response to my emails to their tech support, added fuel to the fire.
Technology has advanced enough to stay connected while traveling, but I discovered firsthand that every new Internet connection is an adventure.
Over the next couple days as I catch up from being away, I will share lots more information on my blog about our learning and impressions during the trip. I hope you stop by.
