Coeur D'Alene, Idaho Contest

Coeur D'Alene (pronounced Cord-a-lane), Idaho is located at the top, skinny part of Idaho, about 125 miles below the Canadian border and about 600 miles from Mike's home in Cody, Wyoming. The town is gorgeous and sits along a 25-mile-long lake in the midst of mountains and forests. Competing in Frisbee Dog contests is a good excuse to visit beautiful, new places.

Millie and Mike made this trip alone while listening to cassette tape sets from Earl Nightingale and Wayne Dyer. They left on a Friday morning, tent-camped at a KOA Kampground west of Coeur D'Alene in Spokane, Washington and competed in the contest at 7 p.m. the following day.

This was Millie's worst performance of the summer. She had rounds of 18 and 16 points, finishing with a 34 total. Nevertheless, this was good enough for 5th place, earning her her first Alpo Frisbee Dog T-shirt. As is usually the case, another two 6-point catches and she'd have won the contest.

So what went wrong? Good question. In practice sessions, Millie regularly catches five 6-pointers in a row within 60 seconds, earning 30 points for the round. In theory, with two rounds, she should be able to score a 60 point total which would be good enough to win most tournaments. However, like many professional athletes, she has yet to score to her full potential on "game day."

Perhaps it was the 7 p.m. contest time. Mike & Millie had to kill the day waiting and did so with a hike and a car ride exploring the area. When Millie rides in the car, she gets very excited trying to "herd" on-coming cars from the backseat. This expends a great deal of energy and Millie seemed a bit "whipped" while competing that night.

Once Millie & Mike score that elusive 60 points, the next step will be to train Millie to return the Frisbee much faster to get off an extra throw or two. Now she returns it at about half her running speed. The really great teams get 6 or 7 throws off in 60 seconds, stretching their scoring potential to 72-84 points.
